Tours

Erie Canal

We have eliminated the road riding and hills.  Just biking the beautiful canal path. We ride from Buffalo to Albany but only on the canal path with a few exceptions of short unfinished pathways.  This means we have to van a bit and it is worth it. Unlike the C&O Canal this canal passes through small towns and even large cities. A flat biking experience.  This tour includes van support and sweep rider, admission to the museum in Medina (www.railroadmuseum.net) and a canal boat tour in Herkimer http://www.eriecanalcruises.com/   Pick up and drop off is the Buffalo airport.

Our longest day is 42 miles our shortest is 26 miles.

Minimum number of riders: 8 / Maximum number of riders: 14. Meals: 6breakfasts, 5 lunches, 3 dinners. Support: Sweep rider/Sag Wagon provided. Local motel accommodations 6 nights.

date  June 21/27

C&O Canal date June 14/17th

We start our ride in Cumberland Maryland on the C&O Canal. Construction started in 1828. Twenty two years later and 13 Million dollars and the canal never made it to its intended destination Pittsburgh, PA but construction stopped and Cumberland, MD. was the end. We ride the path 184.5 miles to Georgetown in Washington DC. Along the way we pass through the Paw Paw tunnel, 3118 foot, brick lined tunnel, the largest and most impressive structure on the canal. If riders prefer we can take a parallel paved trail, the Western Maryland rail trail through Hancock Md which gives us a small break from the rough canal surface. We will stop for a visit at Ft. Frederick State Park, the site of Maryland’s frontier defense during the French and Indian War (1754-1763) Unique because of its large size and strong stone walls. Ft. Frederick was used again during the American Revolutionary war as a prison for German and British soldiers.
We see the remains of many of the locks, on old iron furnace, mule cross-overs, and several waterfalls. We stop in Shepardstown as one of our overnights, and take some time to visit Harpers Ferry. On the way to our overnight in Leesburg we ride the General Jubal Early Ferry across the Potomac. After five delightful days riding along the Potomac we arrive in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

Vernon.  The best way to see the sights is by bicycle.

Amish Tour

A delightful and very interesting bike tour of the Amish area around Intercourse, PA. The eight team horse or mule-drawn plows, one room school houses, buggies and scooters. The truly unique culture of the Amish people can be observed. A look at the “simple life”. This tour is rated intermediate.
